費爾普斯11日在男子200公尺個人混合式，游出1分54秒66的佳績，獲得金牌；日本的萩野公介(Kosuke Hagino)以1分56秒61獲得銀牌；中國大陸的汪順名列第三，成績1分57秒05。
費爾普斯也成為奧運史上第三位，在同一個項目連續四屆奧運都拿下金牌的選手，之前兩位傑出運動員分別是美國鐵餅選手厄特(Al Oerter)，以及美國田徑名將劉易士(Carl Lewis)在跳遠項目保持的紀錄。
